" tonight, mark glaze is the director of the group mayors against illegal guns. steve doolan of the michigan coalition for responsible gun owners. he's having technical problems, we'll bring up his shot in just a moment. mark, you heard from the nra a real focus not so much even on guns, really talking about mental illness, they talked about tracking people who are mentally ill, they talked about pretty much everything, you know, not about taking away guns, but adding more guns. what did you make of their news conference today? >> you know, as somebody who's watched the organization for a while, my dad was a licensed gun dealer in colorado, i know a lot of nra members, it was a really surprising performance. the nra is usually quite smart. then again, they've never been under pressure like this. it struck me as incoherent and bordering on detached from reality. talking about things lapierre gets paid a lot of money to talk about on a regular basis. it was not the time to say things even nra members don't believe. nra members are not the washington leadership. they're two very different thing

for one of the busiest days of the year. elsewhere, parts of wisconsin, iowa, and michigan dug out from more than a foot of snow. the storm was blamed for at least nine deaths in half a dozen states. the day that some pegged as the "end of the world" came and went without incident. the focus on december 21, 2012, was said to be based on projections in an ancient mayan calendar. in mexico, tourists and new age spiritualists gathered to greet the day at mayan archaeological sites. and thousands converged on stonehenge in england for an "end of the world" party coinciding with the winter solstice. it may not be doomsday, but americans are feeling less hopeful about the future. the university of michigan's consumer confidence index fell this month to the lowest point since july. and wall street gave ground today on worries about the lack of a budget deal in washington. the dow jones industrial average lost almost 121 points to close near 13,190. the nasdaq fell 29 points to close at 3,021. for the week, the dow gained about half a percent; the nasdaq rose 1.7%. those are some of the day's m

is as the weather got bad yesterday there was a bunch of warm air over lake michigan and that melted the snow and turned it into a nasty cold rain. they had the flights that were delayed yesterday. they have eaten up the access that was created from that. as we look now at the big board it's not very big. the flights that are out there have those magic words attached "on time." getting the flights out of here. we do see significant delays but they are really on either cotion. you -- coast. you can't blame the delays. >> harris: i only counted six flights they did say on time. chicago catching a break but what about the rest are of the midwest? >> in terms of weather. the rest of the midwest got clobbered. wisconsin really got clobbered in dain county where madison is, up to 20 inches of snow. iowa sees snow that rivals the records they set in 2009 or the levels they set in 2009. you have also got tens of thousands of people without power and that's because the wind gusts got up to 50 miles per hour, harris. >> that is tough. it's pretty chilly to be without electricity. we know that all too w

michigan that you saw sent cnn a video he made where he cuts up his nra card. don? >> listen, about putting armed guards in school. that has been proposed before. so it's nothing new. and it's good at least they tried to do something. but they took no personal responsibility. and no intro aspects at all. it was disgusting to most americans. is there any evidence at all that putting armed guards in school will protect children? >> i mean, there just doesn't seem to be any evidence of it. certainly senator bloumenthal doesn't think so and we didn't get a chance to ask questions of the nra, because they didn't take questions from reporters. plenty of parents would not be comfortable with certainly having more guns in schools. for example, in the shooting at columbine high in 1999, don, you'll remember, there was an armed guard at the school, and 13 people died. now, still, there are plenty of gun rights supporters who think the nra's proposal will make schools safer and that gun control is not the answer. >> susan candiotti, thank you very much. >>> lots more on gun control. at 10:00, i'll tal

in michigan are still without power. flights were delayed or canceled on friday. gabe gutierrez is at hartsfield international airport in atlanta. is the situation better? >> reporter: well, richard, yes, it is. it could be a whole lot worse in many of the country's airports in atlanta. if you take a look behind me, there is some traffic and for the most part it's moving along and many airports throughout the country not reporting many delays and there's a 15-minute delay in newark and not a huge problem. san francisco reported a bigger delay today due to rain. as we look at video from other parts of the country, from st. louis and from kansas city, there's not much of a problem there. there are some long lines and for the most part travelers have gotten to where they needed to go. there are other problems, however, in the northeast and places like upstate new york, virginia and pennsylvania. snow has snarled traffic there and there is some concern that on the west coast, as well, there could be issues. for the most part, traffic is doing much better today than it did in the pas
